I Love My Birthday. I Love My Family Even More. That's a Lot!

Spencer was massaging on Saturday, but he offered to pay Landon to do the yard.  I figured if I had to get Landon up to work, the girls should have to do the same.  We had prayer, Landon headed out to mow and edge the grass, and the girls each chose a room to clean.  I was expecting the normal:  load the dishwasher, wipe the counters; clean the sink, tub, and toilet.  But what I got was a SERIOUSLY spic & span kitchen and bathroom.

The girls and I went to lunch at Longhorn Steakhouse.  It was a bit pricy, but it was seriously delicious.

I pulled out my books and did a tiny bit of homework while the girls went shopping for ingredients to make some darling cupcakes for the cake walk at work.  Spencer came home and took a short nap, then we headed out to the ballgame.

We had fun, the Bees won the game, I ate too much cotton candy, and they celebrated my birthday after the game with an AWESOME fireworks show.

Amid all of that, I got calls from family members, texts from friends, and FB messages galore.  I am incredibly blessed!

When we got home (11:30 p.m.), the kids wanted me to open presents.  I finally did, but just after midnight, so it wasn't TECHNICALLY my birthday.  :)

Also--see that haircut?  Holy smokes!  It's short!  The hairdresser and I were not communicating very well.  But it will grow, and it's really cool (as in temperature), so there's that.

Baseball

Tomorrow is my birthday.  I love my birthday.

Spencer--as a manager at his place of employment--was given the season tickets seats for tomorrow night's Bees game.  It was fortuitous that this opportunity came on my birthday, because I LOVE going to baseball games.

I don't know who the Bees are playing.  I don't know who the Bees players are.  I don't know what place the teams are in.  I could probably officially keep score with a bit of training, but I don't care that much.  I cheer for a hit, I root-root-root for the home team, I like to watch the mascot work the crowd.

Mostly I love the sound of when the ball hits a mitt or when the bat cracks off a ball (especially on a really good hit).  I love watching the chalk go on the field.  I love watching the players dust themselves off.  I love all the smells and the sounds of the game.  And yes, I love the ballpark treats.  I love that it's HOT, because these are, after all, the boys of summer.

I'm super excited about this game.  Happy birthday to me!

Presidential Inauguration

Don't worry--I won't wax political on you.  But today I read that the President must be sworn in on January 20.  Since that was on a Sunday this year, they opted to hold the inaugural "festivities" on January 21.  But President Obama was still sworn in on January 20.  Did you know that?

Neither did I.  And this is why.

20 years ago today I was in labor.  20 years ago today there was NOTHING on TV on any channel except the Presidential Inauguration.  20 years ago today Bill Clinton was being inaugurated as our nation's president.  I remember the day very well.

Only guess what?  It seems that what we were all supposed to be watching on television (forgive me for not being interested that day) was just the FESTIVITIES.  It wasn't even the real thing.

I'm kinda ticked, to be honest.  It's one thing to watch the president get sworn in ON EVERY CHANNEL.  It's another to watch a party.  When you're in labor.  All day.

I'm just sayin'...

Happy Birthday, My Broe-thair!

When I was three years old, my dad was discharged from active duty in the Air Force.  We were living in North Dakota, and my mom was having a baby.  My grandparents took me and my younger brother home to Utah with them for a "visit."  I don't remember really wondering why we were going.  Mostly I remember the small pillows on the plane.

One day Grandma and Grandpa said we were going to go to the airport and watch the planes.  While we watched out one of the windows, Mama stepped out of the plane onto the stairs (before jetways, you know), carrying our new baby brother in an infant seat.  I knew we were going to have a Derek or a Kristin, but I didn't know it was going to be NOW.

That was the first time I saw my brother, Derek.  He grew to be a fearless boy:  he would try anything, and doing so sometimes landed him in the window well or splattered on the concrete.  One of the Derek's "boo-boos" when he was about 8 was what helped me decide NOT to be a doctor.

Derek was also a huge tease, and of all of my siblings, he was the one I most often wanted to KILL.

Once when I was a junior in high school I was up late, studying for a biology test.  My room was next to the bathroom, and he saw my light on.  It was about 11:00 p.m., and he came in and asked if he could help me study.  He sat there with my flashcards till I had it all down pat, and I think we went to bed around 1:00 a.m.

One day the following year (or so), he pushed every button I had.  I got him cornered in Mom and Dad's room, and I ended up smacking him (open-handed) across the face.  I doubt it hurt him as much as it surprised him, but it knocked him to his knees, and he was instantly in tears.  The action nearly broke my heart, and I instantly remembered our late-night study session.  The incident seemed to be a turning point for us.  He didn't push me so far, and I didn't let it get to me so easily.

After Derek came home from his mission, he lived with us (me and Spencer and our three-going-on-four children) for a while.  It was then that I came to adore the MAN Derek.  He was helpful.  He was thankful.  He was generous.  He was happy.  The neighborhood kids would come to the door to see if "Uncle Derek" could come out and play, and he always did.  He was engaged by the time Ashtyn was born, though he was still living with us.  When the doctor said it was time for me to push, he left the delivery room, but stood just outside.  The door was open, but the curtains were drawn.   The doctor said, "OK, give me a big push," and Derek called out, "C'mon, Aud, you can do it!"  He was the first family member allowed back in the room, and he thought Ashtyn and I were all that.
Derek married a woman who became someone really incredible.  She is and always has been a strength to him, and they are dear friends who adore each other and their family.

Today my little brother has a birthday.  I loved him as a baby, I loved him as a child, I loved him as a teen, but I absolutely ADORE him as a man.  He is a good as they come, and I am so thankful that we are eternal siblings and friends!

Happy birthday, Derek!

Today in History

In 1822, Gregor Mendel was born on this date.  Mendel is known as the father of genetics, and it all started with some pea plants.

1822 meets 2011

42 years ago today the world watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.

My parents were watching me dig into my first birthday cake, with the TV on in the background.

Happy birthday Ashley Reber, Logan Gifford, and Bee Jorgensen!  I think of you every year.

My Only Link to Reality

Please, please tell me you have seen and love "Return to Me."  Because if you don't, we might not be able to be friends.

And if you have seen it, and you do love it, you will love the gift our daughter made for my birthday:

Grace, I got it.  I got it, Grace.

Dear Cheryl,

When I was 12, we moved to a small, mountain town. In our town there were several girls my age: Lisia, Deann, Lisa, Cheryl, Jamie, and me. Except for Jamie--who is my cousin--I've only seen these girls a small handful of times over the years. But I never forget that November 6th is Liz's birthday; I think Lisa's is November 3rd. And your birthday is January 20th.

I know this, because your birthday is on my half-birthday. We always had interviews with the bishop at the same time because he tried to visit with us every 6 months.

And today on Facebook I had a birthday wish from a friend from my youth--you!

Happy half-birthday, my friend. I have never forgotten you. (But I'm not cool on Facebook like you are!)

Thursday-Fridays Are Our Friends!

When our children get a Friday off at school, they call Thursday "Thursday-Friday." Everybody loves Thursday-Fridays.

This week I get Friday off of work for Pioneer Day. That makes Thursday a Thursday-Friday.

However, tomorrow is my second-favorite holiday of the year, which means I'm taking the day off. If today was a Monday-Tuesday (in preparation for Thursday-Friday), but I'm not working tomorrow, does that make today Monday-Wednesday?

It's gonna be a good week.

Let the Celebration Begin!

Today is my dad's birthday. Since I have been blogging for a couple of years now, you may already know this. Here is a list of some of the important things you should know about my dad:

1. His birthday falls on France's Independence Day (or whatever they call it), so the French are celebrating Daddy's birthday every year. It's nice of them to do that.

2. My dad is a published author and a prolific writer (not all published, of course). You can check out his books at amazon.com.

3. My dad is an optimist. It is one of his many gifts to the world.

4. There are very few people who cannot love my dad, and I don't know of ANY that my dad doesn't love.

5. My dad is a good Mormon. He's an even better Christian.

6. My dad is a wonderful dad. He's an even better husband. This is his greatest gift to his children.

Happy Birthday, Daddy! I love you!

Happy Birthday Show & Tell

Last week my friend, Carol Westaway, asked me if some earrings just showed up for some reason, what color would I want them to be. I told her lavendar, to go with a fabulous pair of shoes that I have. I haven't been able to find any lovable lavendar clothes, but I could wear black and white and lavendar jewelry and shoes. These are the necklace, bracelet, and earrings she made for my birthday. Aren't they fun?
Carol and Tahnee also brought a big sign for my desk and cupcakes to share with everyone. So fun!
Spencer took the afternoon off work, so he came and took me to lunch at the Lion House. Yum. (But I didn't even TRY to log NutriMirror yesterday.)
After work, Spencer, Briana, Taylor, and I went to see Harry Potter again. :)
It was a lovely day.
(I'm 41.)
