Anyone Can Run A (Stupid) Mile!

Yesterday I returned home to find a card addressed to me.  I did not recognize the address.  When I opened it, I found:

CONGRATULATIONS!
Studies have shown that a very small percentage of the world's population can run 13.1 miles.
(We're so proud to know one of them!)

This wonderful card came from my friend's mother.  She is a fabulous person, and her assertion that anyone can run a mile has become a mantra for me while I'm running.  I think she's a nut, because NOT anyone can run a mile.  But if she says so, I probably can.  :)

2013: The Year of AwesoME. Part 1

A long time ago, Briana and I went to Wasatch Running to get some good shoes.  There was a van there that had a bumper sticker on it that said Determined Enough to Run a Half; Not Stupid Enough to Run a Full.  At that time, I decided that "someday" I was going to run a half marathon.

Running has taken a serious back burner since I started in school, but I decided there was no more putting it off.  That half marathon was to happen THIS YEAR.  So in January I signed up for the Big Cottonwood Half and I had Spencer make me a training schedule.  I have not been 100% faithful in my running, but I've been fairly consistent.  Three weeks ago I did a 10-mile run around our neighborhood, and no kidding, it was awful.  I was miserable, I had to walk the last 1.5 miles home, and my knees and feet were killing me.  That was such a downer, and I haven't been running since.  But there was no way I was going to have worked for 8 months and not do that half.  My goal in the beginning was to be able to run the entire distance.  My goal this month turned into "Do the distance."

Today was the big day!  I was feeling trepidation and nervousness.  I was sure the thing was going to take me around 3.5 hours, because we use the term "run" very loosely to describe what I do, plus my training had taken this serious dip.

Spencer and I went to the expo last night to pick up our shirt and race bib.  We went to Fazoli's for some carb loading.  We came home and got all of our stuff together:  my pink jacket, a rain coat, my running clothes, ShotBlocks and Clif Bars, knee braces, phone, headphones, headband, armband--check, check, and check.

We went to bed, and I slept HARD.  The alarm went off (Bruno Mars, "When I Was Your Man"), and at first I thought, "I don't wanna go to work!"  Then I realized this was race day, so even though it was still the middle of the night (3:30 a.m.), I got up.  We got all ready for the day (at least physically, because I was really nervous) and left.  We parked at Cottonwood High School, then got onto a bus, which took us up Big Cottonwood Canyon to the large parking area near Donut Falls.  When we drove around the S-curve, I knew where we were in the canyon.  It felt like it took FOREVER to get to our drop-off, and I thought, "Holy crap!  What have I gotten myself into?  I have to get to the bottom of this!"

We hung out there for about an hour and a half till gun time.  The forecast was for rain.  Luckily, there was no rain, but it was cold.  Still, not as cold as I expected.  I didn't want to take off my coats and long-sleeved shirts and gloves and solar blanket, but I also didn't want to have something around my waist for the entire waist; so I stripped (don't worry, I wouldn't do THAT to anyone), and off we went.

Spencer stayed with me for the first mile.  At that point we caught up to the 3-hour pace group, and he asked if I wanted to stay with them.  I told him I thought I would and to have a good race, so he took off.  I talked to the pacers for a minute, but they were going so slowly that it would have hurt my legs to stay with them, so I went out ahead.  I took 3 potty stops, I think, during the race.  I alternated Gatorade and water at each stop.  I took a Gu when they gave them out.  And I just coasted.  I wasn't trying to run fast, but I was amazed that I was actually passing people (that didn't happen at Ragnar!).  I caught up with the 2:45 pace group, but again, it would have hurt to slow to that pace, so I passed them, too.

My friend from work, Steve, had run his first half earlier this year.  He had encouraged me to make it as fun as I could by talking to people, so I tried.  I mean, partially you get into a zone, and I didn't want to visit, you know?  But sometimes things just came up, and it was fun.

Can you believe it?  I just said it was fun!

Well, I stopped at bathrooms, but then I'd get right back into the run.  I ran till about 10 miles.  After that my legs were pretty dang tired.  But there was this woman who I passed, then she passed me, then I passed her, etc. several times during the race.  We were right together at Mile 12, and I said to her, "My friend's mother says that anyone can run a mile."  She said, "Yes, especially since you've already done twelve miles."  So I ran.  Then I started walking.  She ran past me, looked at me, moved her head to the side, and said, "Let's go."  So we went together.  Then she started walking.  So I walked ahead of her a bit, till she decided to run again.  I kept looking back at her.  When she ran up to me, I said, "Let's do this."  So we ran the last probably about .5 mile.  She gave me a high five when we got onto 1300 E., and we stayed together as we ran into the school parking lot and crossed the finish line together.  She stopped me while we were in the runners' area and thanked me for keeping her going.  Ha!  What a laugh!  She's the one who kept me going.  Her name was Lori, and she said, "See you next year."  I said, "I don't know."  She said, "Yes, you will!  I'll see you next year!"

Y'all, my chip time was 2:35:10, which gave me an average pace of about 11:30 per mile.  For someone who is going FAST if she's going at a 12:00 per mile pace (I TOLD you we use the term "running" loosely), I was so thrilled with my performance.  Best of all, though I'm sore, I'm not dead or injured.

My other two goals for this Year of AwesoME are to hike the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim, which we are scheduled to do next month; and to graduate.  I'm totally going to get this done, and completing today's race as well as I did really helped my confidence.  Yay!

Today Is...

Today is the longest day of the year--summer solstice.  I love today.  Landon's 4th grade teacher (Hi, Miss Tammy!) once tried to explain to me why it's not coldest on the shortest day of the year and why it's not hottest on the longest day of the year.  I didn't really understand it, but believe me, there's a reason for it.

Today is Ragnar's Wasatch Back Relay.  I can honestly say that I am NOT sad to miss it this year.

Today is Friday.  I'm always glad for a weekend, but Friday afternoons are eternal.  No one is emailing.  No one is calling.  The large projects for the week have already been completed.

Today is a birthday party at work.  Cake, ice cream, M&M's.  Happy day!  It could only be better if Spencer was here.  Or if I wasn't here.  Whichever.

Only a Mile

Last Saturday I jogged 4 miles.  My muscles were tired by the end, but it was quite do-able otherwise.  This Saturday I'm scheduled for 5 miles, and I feel confident about that.

This week I am scheduled to jog 2 miles, 1 mile (missed this one because of this stupid cold), 2 miles (done today--woot!), 3 miles, and 2 miles.  I'm still super slow, but to go out this morning and jog 2 miles was just not hard.  Don't get me wrong.  I breathe hard.  I sweat.  My legs get tired.  But the fact that I can go out and do a couple of miles without really thinking about it is a super big deal to me.  It feels good to not be dying as I run up Charing Cross, which not long ago seemed like a HUGE uphill battle.

One of the Ways My Friends Bless Me

I decided near the end of last year that this year was the year I am going to run a half marathon.

I said that in one sentence, but the truth is that that word "decided" is more than just a fraction of a second word.  In fact, this particular "decide" took several months to happen.  I WANTED to run a half marathon.  I thought it would be COOL to run a half marathon.  I knew it was possible that I COULD run a half marathon.

On the other hand, I like to eat, especially chocolate.  I thought I was pretty cool without a half marathon under my belt.  In order to be able to run a half marathon, I knew I would really have to work, including running and not undermining myself with bad eating habits.  I knew that I would be busy with school and with work and with church and with family (as I always am), and in order to run a half, I must be willing to give up time on those other things in order to run.  Every day.  I also know that when you first start--and as you progress to longer distances--running hurts.  I'm not really into pain much.

So, in two paragraphs and several months, I decided I wanted to run a half marathon.  I started by jogging a tiny bit on my lunch breaks.  I joined a gym.  I went to the Oval on snowy Saturdays.  I lost some weight and I got up at 5:00 a.m. and I was DEDICATED.

But you know how it goes.  Now it's been 3 months, and I'm tired of getting up.  And I have a cold.  And my homework is piling up-up-up.  And I really want that cupcake.  And...and...and...

Today I had lunch with several girlfriends.  The daughter of one has been working for a year in order to be in shape for a competition (toning, but very like body building).  Her competition is this Saturday, and she looks amazing.  It has taken a lot of mental strength for her to do what it took FOR A YEAR in order to get here.  Her coach thinks she has a good chance at winning an award.

The former boss of one lost nearly 40 pounds because "It's amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it."

One has worked hard and is continuing to try to find her motivation to keep working.

I participated in the conversation, which was more about healthy choices and motivation than about weight loss, and suddenly I found myself thinking, "You know, I can totally do this!"  (Remind me of that after work when I have to go for my run, since I didn't get up early this morning.)

I'm really grateful for friends who help me remember to do and be better, just because they are there.

5K

Ya know, running is not fun for me.  Spencer? He thinks it's all really fun.  Any running I do is just for exercise.

That said, there are some things that have been fun.  Ragnar was fun because it was like a huge slumber party.  The Kiss Me Dirty 5K was just an excuse to go play in the mud.  Today Ashtyn and I and some friends from work (hi, Annette, Janece, and Amber!) did the Color Me Rad 5K.  It was held at UVU.

I heard there were 4,000 participants.  They started us in waves.  Each person got a color packet with their registration.  The color was colored corn starch.  There was blue, turquoise, pink, red, yellow, orange, and green.  So we all got busy throwing color at each other.  Then the "race" started.  During the race there were 5 color stations, where volunteers were manning sprayers (like you use to spray your lawn) with liquid color.  So by the end of the 5K we were big, colorful messes.  At the finish line they had a "color explosion" where you could take your color packet (or buy more), and after the countdown, everyone would throw their color in the air at the same time.  It was so dang cool.  Except it got in your lungs.  But it was still cool.

This run was very family friendly.  Kids under 12 did not have to register (but they didn't get a shirt); so there were lots of families there.  This was not the type of race to enter if you really wanted to run.  It was just good, clean (I'm using the term figuratively here) fun.

Dirty Girl Fun

This morning was the Kiss Me Dirty run benefitting gynecological research at Huntsman Cancer Institute.  This was the most fun I've had in a race yet.  Remember that we ALWAYS use the terms "run" and "race" VERY loosely.  This really wasn't a race.  It's was just a lot of fun with 8 other women from our ward!

Looking cute before the race!
Lo, Jen, MaryKay, Val, Stacy, Greta, Aundrea, Lara, Kayla
The "race" begins
Things are gettin' dirty!
Crossing the finish line
Team Dirty Damsels in Distress with swag
Kiss Me Dirty!
This women-only event will be duplicated in Ogden next month.  This was a TON of fun!

#1 -- Ragnar Wasatch Back Relay

This past weekend was the Ragnar Relay.  Unbelievably, this was my third.  Spencer and I acted as captains this time.  I'm not a good captain for something like this.  Fortunately, we had a great team!

Top:  Blake J., Spencer H., Aundrea H., Kayla S., Lindsey L., Stacy U.
Bottom:  Anna W., Briana H., Mary Kay S., Dan S., Rich L., Bob U.
Our team name was Wii Not Fit.  We each made our own Mii character, which we put on our team t-shirt (snaps to Bob for his fantastic shirt design!) and on our vans.  See if you can guess who Mii character is.  I'm told mine looks just like me.

Here are the runners from Van 2.  They are all our ward members (and Blake is a former ward member).

Here are the runners from Van 1.  Rich works at Boeing with Spencer; Lindsey is Rich's wife.  Anna is Briana's friend from a neighboring ward.  We had a fabulous weekend with all of these people!

Ready to run!
The run was from Logan (awesome start line at the football stadium at USU) to Park City.  Temperatures ranged from the 90's to the teens.  We had runners on horrible, rocky, dirt trails and very nice asphalt running paths.  We had runners in dust and runners in snow.  We had runners in early morning hours and very late night hours.  And everything in between.

We finished near the end of the pack, but we finished.  We were all dead tired; many were very sore; some had blistered feet; we were chafed and sunburned.

Results are posted - of the 823 mixed teams that finished we were #792. And #686 in the mixed division. We finished over 2.5 hours ahead of the slowest team.

Sunday the Stobers sent a text, asking who would be interested in running in Vegas in October.  The Hills responded with a (*gasp!*) YES.  (And Taylor has started running, too!)

To laugh at us, you should watch this.

I Must Have Lost My Mind

It has been a month since I ran.  I didn't really miss it.  But Bri and I decided we'd better get busy, so last night we went to the Oval as soon as I got home from work.  We were only scheduled to run a mile, and it was fabulous!  It felt so good!  My legs didn't ache.  My breathing never got out of control.  We didn't have to stop.

Awesome.

This morning we got up and went before work.  We did 2 miles.  I felt good.  Briana struggled a bit.  But we were there, and we did it.

I can't believe I'm saying this...

The Day Started Out With This

Amy and I ran a 5K for Zion's Children of Haiti. It was quite a small event, but it was fairly well-organized. It was held at Sugar House Park, which is a lovely venue (except for the nasty bathrooms!). We had to do 2 laps around the park. That was hard. But Amy got me through it, and I helped her, too. We're a pretty good team.
We stayed for the raffle, and we didn't win anything. But that's OK because we were having fun together.
Biggest part of this portion of the day: We are going to try to do a sprint triathlon together (hopefully with Ashtyn and Breezy, too)!
P.S. Do I love running? No, I do not. But it is fun to do something active with other people like Amy and Spencer and Bob and Stacy and Dan and MaryKay and Suzie and Phil and Kayla and others. Running hurts my muscles and it makes my heart beat fast and sometimes I get sunburned. But when it's done it makes me feel really cool and capable and generally awesome.
P.P.S. Anybody wanna join us for a sprint tri?

Ragnarly!

This is a picture of half of our team for the Ragnar Wasatch Back relay. We are three couples, all from our ward: MaryKay and Dan, me and Spencer, Bob and Stacy. We constituted one half (Van 2) of our team: Ragnarly! Aren't we cool? We've just received our medals at the end of a 36.5 hour, 118-mile race. We spent all that time in the car together, except for when we were each running. We shared meals, naps (thanks, Aunt Marie!), snacks, lights, jackets, many laughs, pain, frustration, and celebration together.
I can't believe I am saying this, but IT. WAS. SO. DANG. FUN.

This is Van 1 of our team. Phil was the only man in that van (he's fantastic). Standing next to him (in the blue) is Suzie, who I love. Phil and Suzie are BIL/SIL, and they live in our ward. The rest of the ladies are Suzie's friends. I wish I could tell you all their names. Suzie, maybe you can tell me the names. They were all fabulous. I think. Because I really only met them each once or twice. :)

Spencer, just taking off for his first leg. He was the All-Star Champion of our team. In fact, someone who works with Dan asked how she could get hold of him and get him on their team. Luckily, Dan kept that information classified. :) Ow, Baby! Check out those legs!

Here is me, near beginning of my first run. ("Run" is still a very subjective term.) I think I look like my mom--we should get her in a running skirt!

Thanks especially to Bob and Stacy for organizing this so beautifully. You are wonderful, and we are grateful to be your friends!

A Change in My Running

This morning I didn't begin my run till after 9:30. It's a lot hotter after 9:30 than it is at, say, 5:30. Just sayin'.

So I decided to try jogging with Spencer's water belt. I thought it would make me crazy, but it wasn't bad. It did rub a little on my back, but I was able to adjust the water bottles and do OK. And actually, I only used one water bottle, so I could run with just the two at my hips and be OK, I think.

I also wanted to go a different direction, so I put on Spencer's watch. I ran mainly on 3200 West till the watch beeped two miles, then turned around. That made the majority of the first half of my run uphill, so I had the downhill section on the way home (mostly). That wasn't too bad a run, actually.

Anyway---

I ran four miles in 45:39.

That is an average of 11:24 per mile, in case you care.

WOOT!

I'm Cool. A Little.

I ran 4 miles yesterday before I went to work. And I rocked the world! Seriously, I was awesome! My muscles didn't hurt. My breathing was good. My time was under 12-minute miles. I felt so cool.

And then I decided to run 5 miles today. Here is a word we don't use in our house: Suck. But that's what I did. We hadn't even gone a block and my legs were screaming at me. Which made my heart go into overdrive.

But Spencer was running the first half with me, and he kept me going. Mostly. And when we reached 2.5 miles, we were averaging 11:50 minute miles. Which was good for me. But he continued on for another 5 miles (show-off!) while I turned around to finish my 5 total miles. V--E--R--Y slowly. And including many stops.

To look at the happy side, I ran (mostly) 5 miles this morning. Also, Spencer ran the first half with me, which makes it so much easier for me. Let's focus on the happy side, shall we?

We're Going to Boise, Idaho!

Spencer bought a used recumbent bike yesterday. We are going to try to get back into shape INDOORS during this goopy, nasty, inversion season. Then we'll get back to running.

We're considering the Famous Idaho Potato Half Marathon in Boise, Idaho, in May. We could stay with Spencer's sister, so the trip would be inexpensive. The registration is only $35. And we will get a Famous Idaho Potato t-shirt after the race!! Admit it--you wish you were going to have a Famous Idaho Potato t-shirt.

Things That Make Me Happy

One could argue that nothing can make me happy--it is a choice I must make. OK. I'll buy that. But humor me for today:

1. Spencer and I got to have dinner with the Ulches last night. It was heavenly and happy and fun. Thanks, Bob and Stacy!

2. Today--in spite of the fact that I do not consider myself a runner--I ran 7 miles. Count them! 1--2--3--4--5--6--7! Isn't that amazing? Me!

3. Taylor dusted the ceiling fan yesterday. (Find joy in the small stuff.)

4. It is a glorious, perfect, beautiful fall day!

5. Tomorrow is a regional broadcast (Stake Conference). So while I get to dress up and go to church, I do not have to sit alone through Sunday School or Relief Society. AND we will be home just after noon. Woot!

6. Did I mention I just ran 7 miles!?

:)

It's a good day.

Happy, Busy Saturday

Landon had his first lacrosse game of the fall season today. He's playing in the Junior League now (7th and 8th graders). He's so little, especially compared to the long, lanky 8th graders. Here's Landon on the faceoff (black jersey). Landon will get in and mix it up. But on his very first play of the day, he got hit hard. That made him pretty hesitant for the rest of the day. (But he's cute!)My parents have been in town this week, helping my grandma, who had hip replacement surgery. They left Orem Saturday morning and spent the rest of the day with us and Derek and his family--what a treat! We all met at McDonald's for lunch. Then everyone came to Lando's game, which really meant a lot to him.

Spencer and I went to TJ Maxx and found me a running skirt. You may or may not get a picture of it sometime in the future. :) I ran 5 miles in the morning--go, me! I also bought a cute pink running shirt, which I'm anxious to try out, just because I'm gonna look so cute! (heehee)

Friday and Saturday nights were the Sterling Singers' patriotic concerts at the Granite Tabernacle in Sugarhouse. We sang to a full house each night, and it was very well received. Briana and Ashtyn came on Friday night. Spencer and Mom and Dad came on Saturday. Spencer's mom brought a friend and came on Friday night, too. Thanks to everyone for your support. Everyone said it was lovely. Spencer said Daddy cried throughout, so it must have been OK. Mostly it was a LOT of fun. I got to meet and get to know a couple of new choir friends, too--how much better does it get?

AND I made it through "In Remembrance" WITHOUT crying. Incredible! (I love that song!)
(I'm in the lower left corner area.)

5K!

Before the race.

During the race.

After the race.
It was raining pretty good when we got to the park to start. It stayed cool through the entire race, but the rain didn't start again till just after we'd crossed the finish line.
I was surprised by how emotional I felt when I finished. We ran at the back of the pack, but I set a personal best time. My official time was 36 minutes and something. According to Spencer's Garmin it was a bit less than that, and I averaged about 11:30 miles.
(The kids were still asleep when we got home.) :)

Who Knew?

  • that I could jog three whole miles? (There was one very short water stop.)
  • that I would buy a cookbook? (I still hate cooking, but this was VERY intriguing, very cute, and every recipe was under 200 calories!)
  • that on August 10, 2009, I would wish I had a sweater while waiting for the bus? (Mildest, most beautiful summer EVER!)

Proud of Myself!

About 3 weeks ago I went jogging for the first time. It was ugly. My muscles hurt, my heart beat about 400 times per second, and my lungs burned.

This past Saturday morning I got up early, but not as early as Spencer, who was running* 12 miles. I started going north, and when I had reached 1/4 mile I was not happy. But I could see Spencer and his running buddy coming toward me, so I couldn't stop (it was a pride thing). By the time we passed one another (and I got a little bit of encouragement), I was almost at 1/2 mile. So I started telling myself, "I can get through one more song on the MP3 player." Then another. And so on. Pretty soon I was at a mile and starting to think I might be able to do the 2 miles I was scheduled to do. At nearly 1.5 miles my muscles were beginning to whine a little bit, and I thought, "I'll do a short rest at 1.5 miles." As I got closer to that mark I thought, "I'll finish this song, and then rest." The song ended after the 1.5 mile turn, and all of a sudden I thought, "Holy cow! I think I can do this!" So I kept jogging for a couple more songs. When the third song started I knew I was going to make it, and I did.

Spencer and Kent came into the house after their run. When they heard that I'd done two miles (as opposed to their twelve) they both cheered and high-fived (hooray for your own personal cheering section!). I was so proud of me!

Yesterday I was supposed to jog 1.5 miles, but Spencer needed a runaway, so we left the house for a while. Today I was scheduled for just a mile. So I thought I'd try to combine them (a little bit), and I jogged 2 miles. I'm really slow (two miles took a half hour), but I got into a rhythm before the .5 mile mark this time. I still talk my way through songs (thanks for the playlist, Taylor!), but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be able to do that 5K in a week and a half. I'm getting excited.

*At best I can only call what I do "jogging." But at the pace Spence runs, it's definitely "running."
